Fascinating Authors

Author Profile: Debbie Pokornik – Break Free of Parenting Pressures

Q: Why did you decide to write this book?

Author: I decided to write this book because parenting and personal development are topics I have written and spoken on for a number of years. Many people had suggested I take my writing to the next level and since I wanted to reach a larger audience with my information I decided this might be a good way to do it.

Q: Do you have any secret writing tips you’d like to share?

Author: One tip I would love to share is to allow yourself to love your writing without becoming attached to everything you say. In other words, be open to feedback from others and recognize that while you are the person in control of the pen there are many benefits in using input from others to help you further expand your thoughts.

Q: Tell us a quirky or funny story about you!

Author: I’m a bit of a health nut and many years ago was introduced to the idea of kinesthetic muscle testing. Our course leader introduced us to a way we could test ourselves holding items in front of our body and seeing if it strengthened or weakened us. Over time this method of asking my body what it needs has evolved for me to the point where I can be seen “asking my body” all kinds of yes/no questions and allowing that answer to guide my resulting action. I often forget how strange a practice this is, until I accidentally mention to someone that “my body says I shouldn’t…”

Q: Have you ever battled writer’s block? How do you deal with it?

Author: I battle writer’s block often, especially when I’m starting with a blank page. Typically if I can’t type my way through it (by just taking any idea and typing), I will take my dog for a walk and start sharing ideas aloud until words start to flow. Thankfully I live in the country where I can do this kind of thing and not be overheard having an animated conversation with myself by others.

Q: What’s your favorite quote?

Author: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” Eleanor Roosevelt

Q: Who inspires you the most?

Author: There are so many people I admire and feel inspired by that it is really hard to narrow it down to one. I think if I look carefully at my life and had to narrow it down to one, my dad has been the biggest inspiration. He’s always encouraged me to be myself, be proud of what I have to offer, and know I can do absolutely anything I set my mind to.
