Fascinating Authors

Author Profile – Richard Godfrey: The End of the Race

Q: Why did you decide to write this book?

A: The End of the Race is a fictional study of the Watergate period. I worked on the book for more than a decade but abandoned it because I could not resolve the underlying mystery.  In 2005 Mark Felt, alias Deep Throat, revealed his identity after 30 years of concealment. Within days of the revelation I received a phone call from a publishing company inquiring about my manuscript. How this company found my name and knew of my work is still unexplained to me, but I resolved to finish the book and the unsolved mysteries of Watergate. The Watergate period has many parallels to America’s current political and cultural polarity and the novel addresses the tension within our national divide.

Q: Do you have any secret writing tips you’d like to share?

A: Unrelenting persistence to tell a story and to enjoy the magic of creating characters that exist in a world of their own. A willingness to constantly be in the learning mode.

Q: Tell us a quirky or funny story about you!

A: In the early 70’s when the Nixonian Plumbers were initiating their break-ins of Medical offices and Watergate, I was working for a small ambulance company in Oakland, California, named ACME. I drove an old, gold topped Cadillac ambulance and sometimes, as we descended from the hills, the hydraulic brakes would fade out. The obvious solution, when we approached red lights and stop signs, was to turn on the siren so we could slide through. So, in a way, I guess you could say I was one of the original medical whistle blowers.

Q: Have you ever battled writer’s block? How do you deal with it?

A: I step away from the writing mode and return to nature, which given time restores creative energy.

Q: What’s your favorite quote?

A: “All that you behold, though it appears without, it is within, in your imagination of which this world of mortality is but a shadow.” (WilliamBlake)

Q: Who inspires you the most?

A: Ghandi, King, Wangari Maathai, Robin Williams, Jesus, Mohammed, Gaia
