Review: Night Freeze

Night Freeze, is a new mystery novel by Lee Emory. It is published by WhoooDoo Mysteries, a division of Treble Heart Books, ISBN: 978-1-93265-76-2, paperback, 303 pages, $13.50 U. S. and Canada.

The story follows the intricacies of an investigation to apprehend the perpetrator of a series of boldly accomplished, macabre murders. It begins with Niall Malone, a detective with a fine reputation and the protagonist, on his way to a new job in another city to head that city’s investigative team. He is struck by a random sniper’s bullet, hospitalized, but only partially incapacitated with the shoulder wound, and convinces his new commanding officer that he still can function adequately. A fellow officer from Niall’s old job, has a two-week vacation coming, wishes to visit his relatives in the new city, and offers to drive him to the new assignment and provide help, as needed, for that period.

Upon arriving, Niall, as an outsider brought in for this position of vital importance, immediately encounters resentment from the compliment of officers in house. In spite of this complication, he manages to select his team and proceed.

Shyla Clifford, a former Naval Officer and now the Assistant Medical Examiner, is the ultimate focus of the bizarre attacks. Each attack is on a loved one, or on a family member, and is accomplished to provide her with maximum mental anguish before ultimately dealing with her personally.

The perpetrator is strong, cunning, obviously deranged, and provides the picture of characters portrayed in such stories as The Texas Chain Saw Murders, and similar tales.

Emory has set forth a story that moves along at a fine pace and holds the reader’s rapt attention. It should provide excellent entertainment, especially for the many persons who today seem to be intrigued by the actions of drugged, demented, or otherwise deranged individuals.
