Fascinating Authors

Debbie Pokornik: Break Free of Parenting Pressures

Q: What excites you most about your book’s topic? Why did you choose it?

Author: I believe all parents can use support at some point in their parenting experience and I love the idea of being able to provide that. I am extremely passionate about both parenting and personal development and believe we do our best work when we feel like people understand and support us.

Q: How long did the book take you from start to finish?

Author: It took me two years from the date I purchased my iUniverse publishing package to the date it came off the presses. I really believed I would have it done in 6 months or less.

Q: What aspect of writing the book did you find particularly challenging?

Author: Coming up with a suitable title for the book was definitely the hardest part for me.

Q: What surprised you the most about the book writing process?

Author: I was surprised by the amount of wait time…waiting for my previewers to finish…waiting for the editorial evaluation…waiting on my cover…waiting for the book to be done in production. I don’t know why but I never dreamed I’d have to wait so much.

Q: Did you have any favorite experiences when writing your book?

Author: My favorite experience was when I accompanied my husband to a convention he was attending in Las Vegas. While he was busy at the convention each day I would be the dedicated author. I would set up the chairs in my room so I could look out the window, sip my tea and type away on my laptop. Without any “real life” stressors fighting for my time, it was very productive and fun.

Q: What do you hope your readers will gain from reading your book?

Author: I really hope my readers walk away from my book feeling tuned into their natural ability and confident they have what it takes to do this job. There is no one way to parent and I’d love it if my book could remove a lot of the self-doubt parents feel so readers fully enjoy this journey and build strong loving relationships as a result.

Q: What projects are you currently working on?

Author: Currently I’m working on a Time-Out For Moms workshop that has the option to develop into a group coaching opportunity. I have several teleseminars for parents in the works as well as a number of workshops for teachers, parent educators, daycare workers and social workers. I am also creating a small NRG book series to accompany the teleseminars.

Q: Is writing your sole career? If not, what else do you do?

Author: At present I work part-time for a school division as their Early Childhood Support and am the Chief Empowerment Officer for Empowering NRG (Natural Realistic Guidance). I provide workshops, trainings and keynotes…I love speaking too much to be satisfied with writing alone.

Q: Did you do any research for your books, or did you write from experience?

Author: I actually wrote this book without picking up any others which made it a challenge when it came to referencing. I have a long list of favorite writers/speakers that I wanted readers to know about, but knowing where my knowledge ends and theirs begins was definitely a challenge.

Q: How did you come up with your title?

Author: Break Free of Parenting Pressures; Embrace Your Natural Guidance was a product of months of playing with different words, talking to others and trying to really pinpoint the underlying message of the book. It finally fell into place at a Mastermind Meeting with a small group I belong to and I actually felt it ‘click’ into place.

Q: What books have influenced you the most?

Author: There are so many books that I could not possibly list them all here. A few that immediately pop to mind are: Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families (and People); Barbara Coloroso’s Kids Are Worth It; Gary Chapman’s The Five Love Languages and many of the works by Wayne Dyer.

Q: Who was your publisher and why did you choose them?

Author: I chose iUniverse to publish my book because it was my first “big” writing experience and I knew I might need some assistance to get me through the process. I had also gone through the submission/rejection process in attempting to get articles published with magazines many years ago and felt my energy was better spent on my book, than searching for a publisher.
